The standard restaurant tip in the United States is 15 to 20 percent of the pre-tax bill. For parties of six or more, many restaurants automatically add an 18 percent gratuity. In major cities like New York and San Francisco, 20 percent has become the baseline expectation for good service.

No, tipping is not customary in Japan and can even be considered rude. Exceptional service is the standard expectation and does not warrant an extra payment. The only exception is private tour guides and certain high-end ryokan inns where a gratuity may be offered discreetly in an envelope.

Tipping customs vary across Europe. In France and Italy, a service charge is often included in the bill (check for service compris or servizio incluso). If not included, rounding up to the nearest euro or leaving five to ten percent is appreciated. In Germany and Austria, round up to the nearest convenient amount.
